Below is a comparison list of Sworn Personnel from 12/02/2002 compared to 01/31/2008.   These comparison lists are copies of Monrovia Police Department Sworn Personnel Rosters.  Positions that are currently filled are listed "Positions Filled."   Positions the city can not find qualified law enforcement personnel for are listed "OPEN."   The Monrovia Police Department currently has 12 open or unfilled positions for a sworn police officer.  Those are 12 police officers that will not be patrolling the streets of Monrovia or coming to your home in time of a crisis.  These 12 officers represent 1/3 of the total officers assigned to patrol the City of Monrovia. This list does not include officers who are currently processing to leave Monrovia or the three known officers who are retiring this year. 

The list from 2002 shows the potential of having 67 sworn police officers.  However, four of those positions were eliminated over time because qualified applicants sought employment in more favorable cities and these positions could not be filled.  Eventually, the funds were diverted to other City programs.  The current list shows the potential to have 63 sworn police officers.  We currently have 51 sworn police officers in the city. 

The MPOA recognizes and understands how difficult it is to recruit qualified Police Officers.  We also recognize the Monrovia Police Department Administration is doing all they can to recruit qualified personnel with the resources they are provided from the City Manager and City Council.  We appreciate their continued effort at this difficult task. 

The MPOA's concern is the City Manager and City Council are ignoring the problem.  We have expressed our concerns and offered solutions.  They simply don't want to admit there is a problem!
